1. Do you regularly open your windows for ventilation?

Why this matters to me: The mold load in my house was so extreme that opening windows wouldn't have helped during my crisis. But now, living with CIRS sensitivity in a mold-free environment, fresh air circulation is crucial for diluting the everyday mold spores that exist everywhere, plus reducing VOCs and other pollutants that trigger my symptoms. And while I need this because of my sensitivity, everyone benefits from reducing indoor pollutant concentrations and bringing in fresh oxygen.

The science: Stale indoor air accumulates carbon dioxide, allergens, and pollutants. When outdoor air quality is good, opening windows reduces exposure to harmful VOCs and prevents toxic buildup (EPA Indoor Air Quality Guide).

2. Do you use an air purifier with a HEPA filter?

Dorothy's reality check: A HEPA filter couldn't have saved me during my crisis — the mold load was too extreme. But now, with my CIRS sensitivity, high-quality air purification is essential for filtering out the everyday mold spores, VOCs, particulate matter and other pollutants that could trigger my symptoms. Even if you don't have environmental sensitivities, everyone benefits from cleaner air — better sleep, fewer allergies, improved cognitive function, and reduced risk of respiratory issues.

The science: HEPA filters trap 99.97% of airborne particles like dust, pollen, and mold spores. They're especially crucial for people with environmental sensitivities (EPA Air Cleaners Guide).

3. Are there air-purifying plants in your home?

What I learned: While plants aren't a cure-all (trust me, I had plenty when I got sick), certain varieties like golden pothos, peace lilies and spider plants can absorb toxins like formaldehyde and benzene as part of a comprehensive air quality strategy.

The science: NASA studies show specific plants, like gerbera daisy, warneckei, peace lily, bamboo palm and others can remove formaldehyde. benzene and tricholoroethylene, though they work best as part of a multi-layered approach to air quality (NASA Clean Air Study, 1989).

There’s another side to healing plants too — what they offer through daily use in your kitchen and body.

4. Do you avoid synthetic air fresheners, candles, or incense?

My wake-up call: After developing severe chemical sensitivities from mold exposure, I realized how many "fresh" scents can actually decrease the indoor air quality. Your nose can't tell the difference between "spring meadow" and particulate matter pollution.

The science: Many synthetic air fresheners can release VOCs that can irritate lungs and disrupt hormone function. Essential oils or beeswax candles are healthier alternatives (EPA Introduction to Indoor Air Quality).

5. Do you clean or replace your HVAC filters at least every 3 months?

The $140,000 lesson: Our HVAC system actually helped spread mold spores throughout our house. A dirty filter doesn't just reduce efficiency — it recirculates the very toxins that could be making you sick.

The science: HVAC systems trap dust, pet dander, and mold spores. A dirty filter means recirculating pollutants, worsening allergies and respiratory issues (EPA IAQ Reference Guide).

6. Are your home materials free from VOCs?

What I discovered: After becoming sensitive to environmental toxins, I learned that paint, furniture, carpets, and adhesives in most homes continuously release chemicals into the air we breathe daily.

The science: These materials often emit toxic chemicals that contribute to indoor pollution and long-term health risks. Choosing low-VOC or natural materials significantly improves air quality (EPA Indoor Air Quality Overview).

7. Do you test for radon or carbon monoxide annually?

The hidden danger: If a professional remediation could miss a room full of mold, imagine what other invisible threats might be lurking. Some dangers have no smell, no visible signs — just slow, silent damage.

The science: Radon is a radioactive gas that seeps from the ground, increasing lung cancer risk. Carbon monoxide is odorless and can cause poisoning if undetected (EPA Indoor Air Quality Information).

8. Do you avoid chemical-based household cleaning products?

My sensitivity story: After mold poisoning, I became reactive to most conventional cleaners. Switching to natural, fragrance-free options was essential for my recovery and ongoing health.

The science: Many household cleaners contain harsh chemicals that linger in the air and can cause respiratory problems. Natural alternatives reduce airborne toxins without sacrificing cleanliness (Environmental Working Group Database, 2023).

9. Is there proper ventilation in your kitchen and bathroom?

What I wish I'd known: Moisture creates mold. Poor ventilation in humid areas can create the perfect breeding ground for the mold spores like Stachybotrys and Aspergillus that nearly killed me.
