Creating a Healthy Home Environment: The Benefits of Biophilic Design

Creating a Healthy Home Environment: The Benefits of Biophilic Design is a Dayhouse Studio blog from Salt Lake City summarizing biophilic design strategies that may support everyday well-being at home—complementary to medical care—for people living with migraine, chronic pain, and depression.

Welcome! Consider investing in the health and well-being of you and your loved ones by creating a healthy home environment through biophilic design.

My name is Dorothy Huntsman, and I am the founder of Dayhouse Studio, an interior design firm specializing in biophilic design, sustainable practices, and an evidence-based approach to supporting everyday well-being—complementary to medical care. To learn more about our services and values, check out our video presentation on our website.

In 2022, we published a peer-reviewed article entitled "Healthy Dwelling: Design of Biophilic Interior Environment Fostering Self-care Practices for People Living with Migraines, Chronic Pain, and Depression" in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. We also presented a seminar called "Healthy Dwellings for Dementia Caregivers" at the 2022 Lynden Legacy Caregiver Conference. Both of these events were the result of a successful collaboration between Dayhouse Studio and OMNI Self-care, LLC.

In the "Healthy Dwelling" article, we discussed evidence-based methods for creating biophilic interiors that may support everyday well-being through relaxation, mindfulness, music therapy, physical activity, aromatherapy, quality sleep and other self-care practices. At the "Healthy Dwellings for Dementia Caregivers" seminar, we presented a biophilic design for an indoor refuge space that may support mental and physical well-being through nature-inspired surroundings.

Did you know that biophilic design is a design approach that brings nature into the home through multi-sensory connections with natural elements? Studies have shown that connecting with nature may support everyday well-being—complementary to medical care.

In future blog posts, we will delve further into biophilic design features that may help support people living with migraines, chronic pain, depression, and dementia. Let's explore the wonders and benefits of nature together. As the saying goes, "Nature itself is the best physician." (Hippocrates).

Dayhouse Studio will continue to serve our clients and communities by helping create environments that may support specific well-being needs of residents—complementary to medical care. With six out of ten Americans living with chronic diseases, there is a great opportunity for architects, interior designers, and construction companies to help shape supportive at-home environments—complementary to medical care. We will continue to work with individual clients and raise awareness about how biophilic design and self-care may support everyday well-being—complementary to medical care.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to Dayhouse Studio to learn how we can help shape supportive home environments for your well-being goals—complementary to medical care. Remember, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." (Helen Keller).

We look forward to fostering healthy dwellings!

Best wishes and Happy New Year,

Dorothy Huntsman

The tools exist. The knowledge exists. If you live with migraine, we have put both to work for you.

This post introduces biophilic design for a healthy home environment. Strategies described here are complementary to medical care—not a diagnosis, cure, or treatment substitute.
