The Garden House by NNAD Studio is a testament to sustainable architecture, seamlessly integrating upcycling and eco-conscious design. Situated in the suburban fringes of Banashankari, Bangalore, this home embodies a raw and organic expression while promoting environmental responsibility.
Upcycling for a Sustainable Home
Central to the Garden House’s sustainability ethos is the extensive use of upcycled materials. The design process began with sourcing elements like doors, windows, grills, and steel columns from restoration sites and older bungalows slated for demolition. This approach not only minimized waste but also infused the home with a unique character derived from its eclectic mix of reclaimed items. The entrance gate, for instance, features protective louvres repurposed from a discarded generator set, creating a distinctive and privacy-enhancing entryway.
Material Choices and Sustainability
The construction materials chosen for the Garden House reflect a commitment to sustainability. The warm terracotta-hued bricks, used prominently in the home’s structure, were crafted from the soil excavated to lay its foundation. This practice not only reduced the need for new materials but also connected the home to its immediate environment. Complementing the bricks are exposed concrete, wood, Kota and Sadarahalli stones, and bamboo, all selected for their durability and minimal environmental impact.
Sustainable Design Features
The design emphasizes sustainability through various features that enhance energy efficiency and environmental harmony. The home’s open floor plan allows for natural light to permeate the interiors, reducing the need for artificial lighting. Clerestory windows and a strategically positioned pyramidical skylight ensure that sunlight reaches the inner recesses of the home, while also offering views of the sky and surrounding landscape.
Green spaces are integral to the Garden House, with multiple pockets for gardens, vegetable patches, and areas for relaxation. These green nooks not only provide aesthetic appeal but also promote biodiversity and the well-being of the occupants. The outdoor courtyard, adorned with a traditional swing and a gurgling water curtain, creates a serene and zen-like nucleus that blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living.
Functional and Aesthetic Integration
The design of the Garden House illustrates how sustainable practices can be woven into the fabric of daily life without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. The use of upcycled bar stools at the kitchen peninsula and the bamboo pendants in the dining area showcase how reclaimed materials can be stylish and functional. The mezzanine level’s reading nook, illuminated by natural light, underscores the home’s focus on creating health-promoting spaces that also enhance cognitive functioning.
